One Last Time, then Tidbits
By Wesley Vaughn
(in memory of Juneau Mac Douglas, 1998-2003)There,
One last time,
At the foot of the steps
-Often waited for us there-
Asleep one last time;
Naught disturbs him now.One last time,
In the pen for the night
-Slept there each night for years-
Now safe,
Not from elements,
But from scavengers.One last time,
In the morning,
Wrapped in a blanket
-The blanket he often slept on-
Not to keep warm,
But cold, with ice.
One last time,
Into the car
-Loved going for rides-
To the vet
-Loved the people there-
Not for the cure,
But "Why?"One last time,
By the pen,
Homemade, handmade doghouse,
-Big enough for us to share. -
Pull up stake,
Coil cable,
Once his security.One last time,
Walk through woods,
He loved it,
Loved to see the deer.Paw print,
Made on last walk,
Wet cement,
Make cast,
One more tidbit of memory.
