A Daughter's Book of Life
Rachel Morris
Memories of candy dreams and jaded eyes
Not yet realizing it was life's disguise
Innocence was in abundance; childhood at its best
The meaning of problems was unknown when you closed your eyes to restExcitement never escaped you; even on a rainy day
Friends were your favorite treasure; everything was okay
Your eyes were always shining as bright as the sun
Energy was barely contained until the day was doneAs you grew older, the disguise slowly melted away
The light in your eyes faded as they began to portray
Something new inside of you that you wish you didn't feel
The memories you once held dear now looked so unrealYou traded your toys for new emotions and boys
Although you knew they weren't what you would enjoy
For deep inside you knew the only thing that made the butterflies swirl
Was the thought of starting out new with a girlYou were afraid of what your mother would think
And you wished her heart wouldn't sink
But you fought for the courage and wrote her a letter
And to your surprise, she seemed relieved and felt betterShe told you she knew and she loved you the same
And that she's so glad that you finally came
To tell her the thing that made up who you are
You were still her little shining starThe years went by and girlfriends came and went
Your mother became sick and started her descent
You sat by her day in and day out
Holding her hand and proving what love is all aboutShe became worse and one day pulled you near
She looked in your eyes and her eyes started to tear
She told you she loved you and wanted you to know
She'd always be with you, but had to let goYou both held each other and cried for awhile
And then she looked at you and gave you a smile
She whispered "I love you" and her eyes became drawn
And with one final breath, your mother was goneYou sat there and cried but then felt a new peace
Your mother didn't hurt anymore; God gave her a release
You knew that no matter what, she'd stay in your heart
And as long as you live, you'd never be apartYou stood and gave her one final look
And began a new chapter in life's book
You knew that even though your rock gave up her long fight
She'd always look down and make sure you're alright
