Waiting
Megan Samuels

Something wanes in the air, we pause in silence
Each waiting for the other to see.
A flicker of adoration comes from within
The ocean of green that stares through me.

Longing sets in as I follow your gaze;
Seeing that your heart resides with her
I step away, mortified, back into the shadows
Avoiding the eyes of the one I love.

Pain compresses my chest every moment
Never having you keeps my heart
Broken. You rush toward her, too distracted
By her touch to see me dying.

You close her in a loving embrace;
Every second a dagger, dissolving me deeper.
Tired of pretending, my emotions consume me.
Your beguiled eyes search for me too late.

I turn to slip away, face saturated with tears,
Too ashamed to watch you walk away.
