Crutches and Canes
By Lauren Williams

A flash of yellow
A shot of pain
A bumpy ride
As they look for a vein

I was wheeled in
The blood was flowing
Doctors looked me over
As time was slowing

Some scrubs pushed me along
Down a long and endless hall
X-rays and scans where done
But the pain was never dull

“He was hit by a bus”
I heard a nurse say to another
“Surgery” She said next
As I felt myself being covered

Bright lights and masked nurses
A blur it all seemed to be
A scrub gave me a shot
And I was slowly unable to see

I woke up hours later
Wrapped in tubes and wires
My hand and hip felt
Like two large fires

10 days and 2 more surgeries
Were still to come
A wheel chair and walker
Needed before I could go home

Therapy was what came next
Slow and hard work was needed
Pain and cursing
Was said when I felt winded

That was many months ago
And time has gone on by
But from time to time
I still stare into the sky

And wonder how close
I came to dying
Laying in that bed
Listening to my mom crying

Crutches and canes
Scars and a limp
Looking forward to walking
One day without a gimp
