Amor Vincit Omnia
(Love Conquers All)
Shaun Callaghan

In the mist of the battle I see you standing,
Shining on the hill top.
Your spirit shimmering
As you watch over me in your thoughts,
As if my guardian angel
Sent to guide my sword true.
I hear the armor clanging, the swords ringing,
Knowing death awaits.
Yet I fear not.
For Amor Vincit Omnia.

The words spoken from those tender lips,
Before the caress of your gentle goodbye kiss.
The memory lingers behind
These battle weary eyes.
Valiantly I fight.
Swearing an oath that I will Return.
That I will again sit beside your radiant beauty.
A beauty that surpasses the most noblest of roses.
I fight with a fever
Unknown to my enemy.
Constantly in thought of those tender words.
Amor Vincit Omnia.

But alas I am doomed to perish here,
Upon these fields that drink the blood
Of the unfortunate souls doomed to perish
For a cause that they could not control.
As my nemesis pierce my battered armor,
I gaze upon the darkening hill top.
No more do you stand watching over me.
No more are you my guardian angel.
I slip but three words silently from my breathless mouth.
Amor Vincit Omnia.

I crumble on the blood swollen fields.
My life blood mixing with the others.
The din of battle seeps away.
The swollen sun shrinks from me.
My fading thoughts turn to you.
My beloved life force.
My white dove, shining in this world of pain.
Knowing, you knew I would not return.
And as my soul floats away from the field of horrors,
A calm befalls me. For I know that all will be right,
As I remember those cherished words.
Amor Vincit Omnia.

As night approached with its cold slayer's grip,
I settle down by your warm side.
And the life I see within you brings,
The most joyous tears to my ghostly eyes.
For the soul of the dead
I now know, can be warmed.
The love for one, can now be for two.
I know that our blood will continue for years to come.
That you will teach our son the words that we departed on.
Amor Vincit Omnia.

Wait.
That is all I have to do.
Wait and watch over my son and my beloved.
For I know when your time will come.
I know when we will get to look into each other’s eyes again.
When the seed I have planted becomes a strapping boy of nine,
To your parent’s life he will go.
For I will be alone no more.
We will embrace in each others arms again.
We will attest to the veracity of
The words you spoke that fateful morning,
Amor Vincit Omnia.
