The Polis Board

Polis board members are CVCC students, staff, and faculty who are interested in supporting the journal of literature and art. The primary task of board members is to review submissions and rate each one according to criteria sheets. Those serving on the board also assist with marketing the journal and planning special events such as the annual awards ceremony. Membership is limited to around 12 people; if more than 12 people express interest, those who have not served before are asked to submit a short essay expressing why they would like work on the literary journal. Senior members select new members based on their essays. Faculty advisor Lana Vélez and Faculty art advisor John Lofaso do not vote on submissions.

The founding board determined that to be effective, future boards should be limited to around 12 members. Remaining board members should select new members based on an essay in which they introduce themselves and tell why they are interested in serving on the Polis Board. Each current board member reads all potential members' essays; then, the board meets to vote on which members to accept. Should the group disagree, it can request interviews with the top candidates. New members on the 2004-2005 Polis Board were chosen based on their essays.
