WEL 126 Pipe Welding I
Syllabus

DESCRIPTION:  Teaches shielded metal arc welding processes including the welding of pressure piping in the rolled (1G), horizontal (2G), and vertical (5G) fixed positions in accordance with section IX of th ASME Code.

OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have a practical working knowledge of:
A:  Pipe welding set-up and weld preparation.
B:  Techniques and skills associated with pressure pipe welding applications.
C:  Pipe butt welds in all positions (1G through 5G) to specified size and dimensions using the S.M.A.W. process.
D:  Properly prepare test specimens for destructive evaluation.

The student shall also:
Become familiar with the safety procedures and good housekeeping that must be practiced in a welding lab.

GRADING PROCEDURES: A= 90-100; B= 80-89; C= 70-79; D= 60-69; F= 59 and below

Daily lab work & tests 60%
Mid Term: 10%
Final Exam: 20%
Attendance: 5%
Shop clean-up, housekeeping 5%

ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance is expected as explained on page 28 of the 1998 - 2000 Catalog & Student Handbook.

LATE WORK POLICY:Any assigned work not turned in when due will be considered late. The penalties for late work will be 10 points per class meeting.

CLASSROOM POLICY: There will be "NO TOBACCO PRODUCTS, FOOD OR DRINKS" in the classroom at any time. Each student is required to clean up the individual welding areas where he/she worked. Any student who must miss part of the lab due to another class conflict or work schedule must do additional work to make up for the time missed. It is the student's responsibility to see the instructor regarding make-up work.

FOOT PROTECTION: Leather high top shoes or boots must be worn during all lab activities. Tennis shoes, sneakers, etc. will not be allowed at any time.

EYE PROTECTION: The laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia require that approved eye protection (safety glasses) be worn during all school laboratory activities. (Virginia Statute 22.10,2 Protective Eye Devices).

ELECTRIC SHOCK!! All welding students must put welding gloves on before turning the power on to the welding machine.The gloves must be worn during the entire welding process.

INSURANCE: Please be aware of the fact that CVCC does not provide accident insurance for students. You are expected to evaluate your insurance needs and take appropriate action.

MATERIALS:   To be purchased from the Bookstore or Welding supplier.

1. Schedule 40 or 80 six inch pipe
2. Safety glasses with side shields
3. Welding gloves.
4. Locking pliers are recommended but not requuired
5. 10 pounds (or more) welding electrodes.
